Celebrity Chef Tatung Sarthou rings in the holiday season bearing gifts for everyone. The author-restaurateur is releasing not one but two follow-ups to his bestselling Simpol The Cookbook

First in the back-to-back release is Simpol Kitchen Secrets, a guidebook on cooking skills and techniques. Here, Chef Tatung breaks down the fundamentals of culinary arts for everyone’s easy reference. It is told through over 100 recipes, 200 kitchen tips, and 600 colored photos and artwork.

The second is Baking Simpol, a cookbook with 100 recipes for desserts, breads, and pastries. Chef Tatung, who has earned praises for his innovative takes on dessert classics such as bibingka cheesecake, tsok-Nut cake, and pichi-pichi with torched queso de bola topping, lays down the art, crumb by crumb, to satisfy your sweet tooth any time, any day.

“’Yung culinary knowledge natin it belongs to the people. Kasi hindi naman orihinal na ideya na nanggaling sa akin. Hindi naman siya kaalaman na ako ‘yung nakadiskubre,” says Chef Tatung.

“Kung ako natutunan ko siya dahil may mga taong nagturo sa akin, may mga taong nag-share sa akin, bakit ko ipagkakait sa tao na matuto din?”

So, for those who are looking to elevate their Christmas feast or just searching for the perfect Secret Santa gift, Chef Tatung has you covered just in time.

Simpol Kitchen Secrets will be out by November 30. This shall be followed by Baking Simpol two weeks later. Both books will be available locally and abroad through Lazada, Shopee, Amazon US, Amazon Canada, Amazon SG, and eBay.

The two titles shall be published under Vertikal Books, a boutique press specializing in the creative nonfiction genre, specifically culinary content

Simpol Kitchen Secrets and Baking Simpol shall be the fifth and sixth books penned by Chef Tatung. His previous works have won the prestigious World Gourmand Awards in Paris, France. Last October, two of his bestselling books, Rice to the Occasion: Kanin to Kakanin and Simpol: The Cookbook, were also featured in the Frankfurt Book Fair, one of the largest and oldest trade fairs for books and content in the world.

Rep. Cheryl P. Deloso-Montalla, Chairman of the House Committee on Revision of Laws, hails the ratification today by the House of Representatives of the bicameral conference committee report on the disagreeing provisions of Senate Bill No. 2332 and House Bill No. 7836 on increasing the age in determining statutory rape.

“In the report, we determined that the age of statutory rape be set to under 16 years of age in view of the global standard on statutory rape age,” Rep. Deloso-Montalla explained. “We also aligned with this bill the age of consent in other crimes under the criminal code and other anti-child abuse and exploitation laws like the R.A. No. 7610,” she added.

The Representative of the 2nd District of Zambales also said that the Committee “… also provided a “close-in relationship” or “sweetheart clause” to recognize the legitimate relationship between 2 teenagers... that is in consonance with the age of criminal liability under RA 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act and the Juvenile Justice Welfare Act or RA No. 9344, as amended by RA No. 10630. Most importantly, rape and other acts of sexual exploitation, under this bill, is now applicable to a man, woman, or child."

“The enactment of this bill is long overdue as the data scream loudly and clearly speak that the crime of rape remains rampant in the country. What we know are the reported cases but the true statistics may be higher considering that there are a lot of unreported and unaccounted cases of rape and other forms of sexual abuse and exploitation that are happening,” Rep. Deloso-Montalla further said.

“Now that we have ratified the Bi-Cam report on the anti-stat rape bill, it is now a step closer to becoming a law! We will always endure to ascertain that our children are given optimum protection under our laws and within the bounds of the democratic society that we have,” she averred.

Initially, 9 bills were referred to the Committee on Revision of Laws relating to the amendments to Anti-Rape Law with specific provisions on increasing the age of consent on statutory rape. There were similar bills that were referred to the Committee on Welfare of Children Chaired by Rep. Yedda K. Romualdez. The 2 committees jointly heard and deliberated exhaustively on the proposed measures and came up with a substitute bill - HB 7836 or An Act Providing for Stronger Protection Against Rape and Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Including Increasing the Age for Determining the Commission of Statutory Rape.

The bill was approved on Third Reading by the House of Representatives on December 1, 2020.

“Teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions.” Teachers are living vessels of knowledge and of dreams and aspirations of children whose voices fill teachers’ hearts and minds. As such, we recognize that lifelong learners need lifelong teachers—both championing education toward a better future for all.

With the desire to fuel hope and inspire action among Edukampyons, REX Education and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) launched the PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan, a scholarship program that aims to champion, strengthen, and advance teacher education by encouraging the best and brightest learners to pursue the teaching profession.

Addressing the Challenges Faced by the Education Sector

According to the 2018 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, Filipino students ranked the lowest among 79 countries in mathematics, science, and reading, with over 80% of students not reaching the minimum level of proficiency in reading. In a 2019research conducted by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS), scores of Filipino students decreased by 61 points in mathematics and by 83 points in science from 2003 to 2019. The Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) also found that in 2019, at least 83% of Grade 5 students scored below reading and mathematics standards expected for end of primary schooling.

According to the World Bank Philippines Report 2021: “Improving teacher quality in schools will mean attracting and selecting the best candidates into the teaching profession. To strengthen teacher quality, [we] should begin from selecting the right people into the profession. Policies in teacher recruitment and hiring should be aimed at increasing the attractiveness of the career, such as incentivizing high achievers to pursue teacher training and eventually enter into the profession.”

Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan

The Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan scholarship program rings true to REX Education’s Edukampyon advocacy: to rally every Filipino to champion education so that every learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. As Edukampyons, we are duty-bound to uplift the Filipino learners today and in the future—and help make them whole. The time to act is now.

By encouraging the best and the brightest to pursue the teaching profession, we are investing in our learners and in the future of Philippine education. By being partners, we are working together to build and strengthen the path toward a brighter tomorrow for all of us, for our nation. By supporting the program, we are giving back to the teaching profession the highest honor and prestige it deserves.

“Teaching is a profession that has the power and influence to inspire the grooming of the greatest artists, doctors, and innovators. So, it is essential as Edukampyons to look into how we can advance and strengthen the quality of teachers and instructors… from basic education to the tertiary level. We seek for the best and the brightest to work with us, commit to the profession, and start creating a rippled effect as we enhance teachers’ quality today. This small act that we are doing in the present can have a great impact on all of our futures,” said Don Timothy Buhain, chief executive officer of REX Education during the launch of the program on October 5, 2021.

What’s Next?

REX Education and PEAC are here for you. Students can apply for the program through their respective schools; while schools can nominate their top students for the scholarship, to encourage good-standing students to pursue Teacher Education for their tertiary education.

REX Education and PEAC will also partner with teacher education centers of excellence (COEs) and centers of development (CODs) across the country to grant the scholarships, ensuring quality education and training for future teachers.

By school year 2022–2023, 50 of the best and brightest freshmen will be selected across four basic education specializations: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Those admitted to the program will not only enjoy living and technology-support allowances; they will also receive the best training from partner COEs and CODs across the country and bear the pride and responsibility to give back and advance the community.

Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan was launched through a virtual event that gathered educators and representatives from PEAC, REX Education, Philippine Business of Education, ASEAN Teacher Education Network, the Department of Education, and the Commission on Higher Education. Apart from launching the initiative, it was also a celebration of teachers across the country in time for World Teachers’ Month.

Those who missed the event can still watch it via REX Education Facebook page.

Subalit sabi nga ng isang superhero, “with great power comes great responsibility.”

In the world of non-alcoholic carbonated beverages, root beer (yes, it is alcohol free) holds a special place in our hearts.

This bubbly, sweet bliss is reminiscent of our summer days, especially when it is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, turning it into that nostalgic sweet treat – the root beer float.

The man who gifted us with this creation is the late Frank. J. Wisner, owner of Colorado's Cripple Creek Brewing. It is believed that Wisner came up with the idea while mountain gazing but missing the snow-covered peaks. He then thought of making his own icy mountain top with a mug of root beer as the mountain and scoops of vanilla ice cream as snow caps. He initially called this the “Black Cow Mountain.”

Every year in August, we celebrate this dessert masterpiece with the National Root Beer Float Day. In the U.S., this is often celebrated with festivals and competitions. In the Philippines, even amid a pandemic and quarantine restrictions, we can celebrate this day at home by making different versions of this foamy and fizzy drink.

The staple, of course, is root beer. One of the brands available in the local market is Mug Root Beer, a product of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) —the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country.

Get creative

Other than the classic root beer and vanilla ice cream float recipe, the food website, www.sugarandsoul.co shared other creative ways to make it.

“The Chocoholic”
  1. Prepare a syrup-rimmed glass rolled in sprinkles
  2. Pour root beer
  3. Add scoops of ice cream but swap vanilla for chocolate ice cream
  4. Top with whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup

“The Very Vanilla”
  1. Highlight the vanilla flavor by adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the root beer
  2. Finish it off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream—and now you’re in vanilla, milky heaven

“The Slushie”
  1. Simply combine vanilla ice cream, root beer, and ice in a blender
  2. Blend until it reaches smoothie texture
  3. Top with whipped cream and cherries

These root beer float recipes will definitely be fun to create while we are on home quarantine.

“Everything about Mug root beer appeals to the senses: the rich foam, the unique aroma, and the feeling of ice-cold refreshment. It's the perfect drink for the whole family,” said Frederick D. Ong, PCPPI president and chief executive officer.

So now, we raise our mugs and toast to the bubbliest, fizziest, milky drink that is Root Beer Float!

Mug Root Beer is available in 300ml can, 1.5L PET and 2L PET in supermarkets, groceries and convenience stores. PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of well-known beverage brands in the Philippines: Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting, Premier, Milkis, and Aquafina.

The sweltering summer days are over as the country’s weather bureau declared the start of the wet season. During this season, we need to keep our guards up because many illnesses emerge.

These include diarrhea, caused by viral or bacterial infection; waterborne illnesses like typhoid fever, cholera, and leptospirosis; and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.

To avoid contracting these diseases, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—reminds the public to keep hydrated, especially that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

“It is important that we keep our immune system strong. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stay hydrated,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

To stay fit and protect yourself from diseases, here are some healthy habits you may do.

Eat healthy

What you consume today will have a huge impact on your health in the future. A good eating habit is one of the most basic practices to have a robust immune system.

Making a well-balanced meal is simple - just add more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grain food, switch to low or zero fat options, and cut back on sugar.

Exercise regularly

Exercising remains one of the most effective methods to strengthen your body during the rainy season. You do not have to buy expensive machines or pay for gym subscriptions. You only need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. To safely exercise at home, you may check various workout videos online. If you opt to do outdoor walk or run, follow social distancing and other safety protocols.

As part of your workout routine, replenish what you lose in sweat with sports drinks like Gatorade. It contains electrolytes that rehydrate your body to avoid dehydration.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is as important as eating healthy and exercising. A study from the Carnegie Mellon University found that people with poor, short sleep have greater chance of getting sick.

Quality sleep helps uplift your immune system. To get quality sleep, reduce your blue light exposure at night, avoid caffeinated drinks before bedtime, and reduce day time naps, among others.

Hydrate

Proper hydration is vital in having a strong immune system. It detoxifies and flushes out waste materials from your body. It also helps transport nutrients to our organ systems.

Taking in safe water is a must to avoid infection from water-borne diseases. To have a clean drinking water, you need to boil water for at least three minutes or do water chlorination. Or you can drink purified bottled water, like Aquafina and Premiere.

If you’re moving all day and feel sluggish or tired, that’s because you lose more than just water when you sweat. You lose fluids and electrolytes. With this, it’s important for us to stay healthy and hydrated with an Electrolyte Drink like Gatorade Ion.

“Even during rainy season, we need to hydrate to arm our body from diseases and keep our immunity in top shape. Over the years, PCPPI has been helping Filipinos achieve that with our hydration drinks,” Ong said.

The freedom to fully express one's identity without fear of judgement is the fruit of years of fighting for equal rights and representation, and every June, we celebrate how far we've come with LGBTQIA+ Pride month.

It takes courage to embrace your truth and tell your story to the world. That's why it's important to put the spotlight on those who have already found the courage and confidence to flaunt their pride, so that they can inspire others to do the same — just like these strong women.

Mela Habijan Miss Trans Global 2020

Mela’s journey to womanhood began with her hair. After years of wearing synthetic wigs or putting a bath towel over her head, she finally let her hair grow long. “At first, I tried to joke about it, “Ma, pagbigyan mo na ako! Rocker na ako ngayon!” She shared on her Instagram post. As time went by, she realized that having straight, smooth, and jet black hair felt right. “I was meant to rock my hair with confidence.”

She found pride in her crowning glory and made sure to give it the proper care it needed. “… Everytime people complimented my hair, my honest, consistent, and confident reply has always been, “Alagang Pantene yan!”, Mela proudly shared in her Instagram post. “I have always flaunted my hair with pride because [it] reflects my journey to being the free and authentic Mela that I am today. As a proud trans woman with feminine expression, my hair has been my source of power. And that’s definitely Salontastic!”

Chezka Carandang, Pilot

“As a member and supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community, I, too have my own journey in raising my voice for my happiness and myself.” Chezka shared on her Instagram.

Chezka, like many others, was afraid of how her family and friends would react to her identity. So, she joined predominantly female activities like modelling and beauty pageants as she tried to figure out how she wanted to present herself. Later on she realized that she wanted to express herself physically as a woman, “…and that’s why I started growing my long straight hair with Pantene. Because Pantene has always been there in helping me feel stronger and Salontastic! Flaunt your #Pride with Pantene. I’m truly thankful for my community in helping me understand them and myself. Know that you are not alone and that we are heard.”

Allies also play a role in helping make the LGBTQIA+ community a safe space by fostering a culture of acceptance and respect, and advocating for equal rights and opportunities.

Gabbi Garcia, Actress

Gabbi, an ally, shows her full support for the LGBTQIA+ community in her Instagram post. “I’ve always been a proud supporter ever since I was young. I believe that everyone should be treated with love and respect. There is definitely no room for hate in this world! Everyone can be Salontastic regardless of gender!”

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—aims to secure Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) from Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), one of the world’s leading audit and certification companies.

PCPPI bagged FSSC for its Muntinlupa, Santo Tomas, Rosario, Davao and Bacolod plants. It is working towards certifying its other six plants in Cebu City, Naga City, Zamboanga City, Cagayan de Oro City, Iloilo City, and Tanauan within the year.

“It is imperative to strengthen our food safety practices and standards which we have always valued in PCCPI. We always aim to produce quality products that do not just comply with regulatory requirements but exceed customer expectations, as well,” said PCPPI President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Ong.

The company’s certification aligns with World Health Organization’s goals as it marks this month’s World Food Safety Day. This year’s theme is “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow.”

The company follows stringent measures on food safety and quality. Its policy requires high food safety targets, regular process reviews, and strong food safety culture across all levels in the organization.

To further ensure quality production, PCPPI aligns with PepsiCo global practices. These include random trade sampling to verify food safety compliance and increasing food hygiene awareness among stakeholders.

Owing to its strict food safety practices, PCPPI’s Zamboanga plant was recently given the PepsiCo Caleb Bradham Award. The distinction is presented to Pepsi manufacturing plants which exhibit exemplary food safety and quality assurance practices.

“PCPPI believes that a strong food safety culture helps us promote food hygiene outside our operations. Our consumers will remain confident in our brands and in our ability to refresh them with clean and safe drinks,” Ong added.

With the threat of the pandemic still very much present in the country, a simple cough is enough to cause heightened anxiety these days because it is one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19. Unlike before where this matter was usually taken lightly by most, the current situation has people rushing to find a solution when the first signs of a cough arise.

Coughs are our bodies’ natural response to expel unwanted organisms from our lungs caused by allergies, irritants, asthma, and the most common of all, viruses. Although coughs caused by common viruses go away in time, it's better to treat them as soon as possible and equip our bodies with added immunity for faster recovery.

In the Philippines, only one cough medicine combines the trusted formulation of Solmux with an essential mineral for faster recovery: Solmux Advance, the only one with Zinc! This unique and powerful combination of Carbocisteine and Zinc is proven effective to reduce cough bouts in as fast as 3 days, compared to the usual 10 to 14 days of recovery. The addition of Zinc to Carbocisteine not only liquifies sticky phlegm, but also improves the body’s immunity for faster recovery from cough.

Carbocisteine is scientifically proven to treat cough with phlegm and other respiratory tract disorders, and have properties that inhibit viruses and bacteria, making it more difficult for microorganisms to cause infections. The right levels of Zinc, on the other hand, can help speed up recovery from infections like the common cold through its action on immunity. It also activates white blood cells to help the body fight off viruses including coronaviruses.

Given the continued increase in COVID-19 cases every day plus the occurrence of other viral respiratory infections, Filipinos can protect themselves and their loved ones with a more advanced 2-in-1 solution for faster cough relief.

The Medical City Expert Reveals How to Protect Your Baby from Diaper Rash

As a sigurista parent, fulfilling different roles can be a challenge when you run multiple tasks, yet so little time and energy left to do it all. This can sometimes leave you to wonder, “Am I choosing the right products for my baby?”. Although it’s only natural to worry when your baby’s health, hygiene, and comfort are threatened when the products you thought were good enough to help protect them.

In order to prevent and alleviate discomfort, it is important to identify common infant health problems such as colds, coughs, fevers, and vomiting. Your baby might also experience common concerns like diaper dermatitis, also known as diaper rash.

Opting for diapers that aren’t able to provide baby’s needs not only puts their skin at risk of babad and kulob but it also leaves your pockets dry — spending more in the long run in search of the right diaper. This begs the questions, what is diaper rash and how do you prevent it?

What is Diaper rash?

Diaper rash is an inflammatory skin condition that affects the most sensitive part of your baby’s body. It is often caused by prolonged exposure of the skin to wetness and moisture.

According to Dr. Krissy Dim-Jamora, a board-certified dermatologist, Deputy Director of Aesthetics by The Medical City and Head of the Skin Cancer Unit of Medical City, baby’s skin is thinner, and at risk of babad compared to adult skin. Dr. Krissy mentioned, “When [your] baby’s skin is left to soak in a moist, wet environment for a long time, the skin can break down. This results in redness, pain, and swelling.”

With temperatures that can get as hot as 42 degrees Celsius in a tropical country like here in the Philippines, diaper rashes can also happen more often during the dry season. “The moist environment of the urine and feces creates a nasty environment for baby’s thin, gentle skin.”, as described by Dr. Krissy. If your baby’s skin is unable to breathe due to trapped heat, a diaper that does not allow air to flow can leave them feeling kulob.

When unattended, a chronic diaper rash can result in thickening of the skin, pigmentation problems and worst of all, a chronic wound that may lead to an infection. Dr. Krissy also adds, “Keeping baby’s skin healthy will save parents money from doctor’s visits and dermatology creams.” Diaper rashes don’t only cost parents’ additional expenses, but it also costs baby’s skin health, comfort, and sleep development.

To protect your baby from babad and kulob, it’s best to practice measures and use quality diapers with the proper technology to prevent diaper rash from happening.

Protect Baby’s Skin with Pampers with 2-in-1 Rash Shield

Endorsed by The Skin Health Alliance, Pampers Pants — now with NEW 2-in-1 Rash Shield that keeps baby protected from the two main causes of rashes: babad and kulob. Even when your baby wears Pampers Pants for a long time, you’re less likely to worry about baby’s skin health.

Pampers Pants are made with a super absorbent kontra-babad core that not only absorbs up to 30x their weight in urine, but also provides up to 99.9% vs. wetness.* With kontra-kulob features that release heat and humidity for less stuffiness, Pampers Pants allows baby’s delicate skin to breathe.

According to Dr. Krissy, a quality diaper should be able to keep moisture away from baby’s delicate skin and allow good ventilation in the private area. “The diaper should draw the moisture from urine away from the baby’s skin so that the baby does not sit in the moist environment. The diaper should be able to last the whole night of peeing without the urine spilling onto the bed. This will allow the parents to have a good night’s sleep.” No wonder Smart Parenting moms nationwide vouch for Pampers. It passed their standards and evaluation making Pampers Pants #SPSmartMomApproved!
